Previously On Children of The Atom

There is another group of teenage mutants and they call themselves the Mutant Liberation Front. Lead by the sociopath Serenity, these mutants have caused quite a bit of havoc in the lives of the Children of the Atom. And as revealed recently by Crystal Amaquelin, the Mutant Liberation Front’s Elemental, her father was behind the loss of the COTA kids’ powers. Little was known about these mutants, until now.

There is Betsy Braddock, aka Psylocke, the Japanese born girl who was adopted by the wealthy Braddock Family. With them she lived a happy peaceful life with her two brothers, Jamie and Brian. Betsy fondly remembered this past, ‘the good times’, when everything was right and happy, when her father told her the family’s fable about imaginary Albion, aka “Otherworld”.  Yet Betsy’s life would begin to shatter when her older, troublesome brother Jamie‘s mutant powers emerged.

Then there is Calvin Rankin, aka Mimic the team leader of the Mutant Liberation Front. He grew up in Reno with a loving mother and abusive father. Unlike Betsy, Calvin never had a happy life. His father was a thug working for a sleazy casino owner, Tony Morales. One day when he stole money from Tony, Tony sent two of his minions after Calvin’s father, killing him. Calvin was just eight years old as he helplessly watched as his mother was raped and killed by those same two men. He would spend the next five years in foster care, until his mutant powers of mimicking others mutant ability emerged. This gave Calvin a new life promise, ‘Get all the power he can so he could never be weak again.’

Which bring us back to Crystal Amaquelin, daughter of the genius geneticist Agon Amaquelin. Her whole life Crystal and her brothers Max and Locke, sister Dusa and cousin Bart have been literally breed by Agon to help create the mutant gene. Max, Dusa and Bart each went through their ‘transformation process’ using Agon’s drug the Terrigan Mist and though they did emerge with powers they also had imperfect X-Genes, which proved dangerous. Max was driven mad, Bart left unable to talk and Dusa was left near uncontrollable hair and intense headaches. Agon called them the ‘Inhumans’.

Crystal was different. She was born a mutant, considered a failure right at birth. All Crystal wanted to make her father happy as she idolized the man. Yet her father saw her less of a daughter and more of something. She would be his catalyst for the cure.

Yet there is one more member of the Mutant Liberation Front that needs to be mentioned. Though the word ‘one’ should be taken loosely.
